The cold blast has finally arrived! We do head outside most days, so please make sure your child has a warm coat, hat and mittens each day! Thanks so much!

We are adjusting to just one teacher in the classroom again. Mrs. Ake finished her full time teaching last week and has been taking the opportunity to observe in other classrooms. The kiddos are doing a good job as we adjust to just one teacher in the room! Mrs. Ake’s last day will be on Wednesday, December 8th. We have been so lucky to have her with us this fall!

We are learning about solids and liquids in science. We sorted our solids by three properties: color, size, and shape. Next week we will explore with them by stacking them and rolling them and even putting them in water!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

I just can’t believe we are this close to Thanksgiving! Next week is a short week! We will be doing plays during reading groups to help with our fluency. We will also be playing some fun games to review our math skills. The following Tuesday will be day 5 and we will be ready to dive back into our curriculum after our restful holiday!

I will not send home a newsletter next week. Have a wonderful weekend and a restful, joyful Thanksgiving!

This week Mrs. Ake has been teaching the children lots of fun facts about Pilgrims. Next week we will learn about Native Americans. Please check out the cool link below for a website that explores the history of the first Thanksgiving. We had an opportunity this week to use the interactive smart board to explore this website and we will do it again next week as well.

We’ve been busy making good predictions about our stories. As you read with your child at home, ask him/her to predict what might happen next in the story. This is a great way to check your child’s comprehension.
Thank you all for coming in for conferences this week. It was a pleasure talking with all of you!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Our room parents have either contacted you via email or will be soon to let you know how you can help with the party. Please send in your child’s costume in a bag. We will change into them in the afternoon. Please no weapons or super scary masks. Thanks!

We were very busy in first grade this week! We worked hard on revising our personal narratives. These stories are going to be so cute! I was very impressed with how the children were able to add detail to their stories! Those kindergarten teachers did such a super job teaching writing!!

In Core we are working on being fluent readers. We sure sound nice reading with a normal talking voice!

I’m sure you have heard that the beetles arrived! This group has been fantastic scientists as they observe the pupas changing to beetles. We’ve seen beetles still in their pupas walking around. That was a first for me!

Next Wednesday we will be walking to the public library. Please make sure your child is wearing a jacket and comfortable shoes. Thanks!

Have a wonderful weekend!

The children have done a very nice job recording their scientific investigations in their journals. Mrs. Ake showed us a picture of Jane Goodall today and talked about how we are scientists just like she is!

The joy of teaching first grade is the leaps and bounds in growth we get to see! I am thrilled with the work this class is producing! You should be very proud of your children! Thank you for all you do to help them be successful! Enjoy the long weekend!

Well, I was wondering why things were a bit goofy the last couple of days, and then Mrs. Ake reminded me that we had a full moon this week! I’m not sure how much truth there really is in that, but if you work with children, you know that things can sometimes get a bit silly around full moon time! Nonetheless, we have managed to have a most productive week! It is so nice to have the routine learning behind us and the curriculum well under way! I am so excited to get writing on our personal narratives! Next week we will be learning about nouns and verbs, so our narratives will have to wait a week, but I know they are going to be great once we get going!

Please ask your child about their science flip books! Mrs. Ake has done a wonderful job helping the children learn the characteristics of animal groups. Next week the insects arrive! No hints on what is coming, the kiddos will be in for a big treat on Wednesday! (As long as the mail cooperates and delivers them that day!)

Please remember to send in your child’s library book on Monday!
Have a wonderful weekend!
