It was nice to be back today!  I was out sick, but the class did great while I was away.  We are working on nouns and verbs in writing.  See if your child can tell you what they are!!

In Core we are talking about three questions we can ask ourselves while reading:  Does it look right?, Does it sound right?, Does it make sense?

Derek is our student of the week.  He wants to race motorcross when he grows up!  Be careful Derek!  :)

Have a great evening on this last day of September!

We had Book Buddies today!  We had a super time getting to know our fifth grade book buddy!  They read us a book that we had picked out of our library corner.  We also read to them.  We are practicing reading with expression and fluently while we have Book Buddy time.

Earlier today I was having trouble accessing my website, so the new newsletter may not be posted this weekend.  To update you on the cycle days, Monday will be day 1.  The children will have gym.

Melissa was our Student of the Week.  She wants to be a fire fighter when she grows up!  Wow!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Today we started walking 1 lap at each recess for the PTO’s Walk to School program.  What great excercise!

We worked on our storyboard’s for our personal narratives.  Ask your child what he/she is doing for a story.

We learned a new strategy for when we are stuck on a word: Think about the story.  We will be focusing on this skill for the next couple of days.

We took our first math test today.  I will keep these for my records.  Everyone did a great job!

Mrs. Topper, the school counselor, visited us today.  She played a fun name game with us and read a book about feelings.  Frog talked to us about feelings during Health class as well!

Please send in the library books tomorrow!  Have a great evening!

The class had their first substitute teacher of the year today!  I was out of the room for most of the day administering a reading screening to the students.  Your child worked with me or another staff member today to complete the screening.  This tool gives us great information to help individualize your child’s reading instruction!

The students were great today while the substitute was in the room!  Yeah for 1-B!

Don’t forget to send in your “Walk-to-School” forms.  The money you collect for this program goes to help the PTO fund all the wonderful programs they do for our school.

Have a wonderful evening!  Have fun looking for those thermometers! :)

Happy Friday everyone!  Well, we made it through our first 5 day week!  Everyone did a super job!  This is such a nice group of students.

Today we practiced using letter sounds and chunks (such as at, an, er, th) to help us when we come to a word we don’t know.  We sang a song “Look at the letters and the chunks.  Don’t let that word put you in a funk!  If you get stuck on a word, look at the letters and the chunks!  Chunkity-chunk-chunk-chunk-chunk!)  This song goes to the tune of “Yackity, yack, don’t talk back, if you want to practice it at home!

We are learning how to use the writing process to help make our stories even better than they currently are.  Today we wrote down several topic ideas for a personal narrative (a story about ourselves/our own lives).  Ask your child what his/her topic ideas are.

Grace was recognized for staying on task this week!  Way to go Grace!

Thanks for helping your child with the math homework this week!

Enjoy your weekend!

We had a nice trip to the public library today.  The children made leaf creatures based on Lois Ehlert’s story Leaf Man.  When we came back to school, we wrote stories about our leaf creatures.

Each week Mrs. Benner will be posting a student of the week  for each class.  Micah is our student of the week.  He wants to be a fire fighter when he grows up.  That is awesome!  If you haven’t turned in your child’s student of the week poster from back to school night, please do so at your convenience.  Please let me know if you need another copy.

Have a wonderful evening!

We had a great day today!  What a super bunch of workers we have.  It was so nice to see a large number of students help another friend at the end of the day when some materials were accidently knocked over.  A whole crew went over and pitched in to clean up!  Wow!

We have library day tomorrow for our special.  Please make sure your student returns his/her library book.  We will also be walking to the public library tomorrow.  Make sure your child is wearing sneakers for the walk.  Thank you!

This week’s social skill is “Staying on task during a lesson”.  See if your child can tell you what to do for that skill.  So far, we have lots of great on task behavior!

Have a great evening!

Happy Monday everyone!  We were a tired bunch today, but that didn’t stop us from getting a lot done.  See if your child can make you a beautiful lower case t, a 3 or a 4!  We also were busy practicing our reading strategy of looking at the picture and getting our mouth ready.

This afternoon in math we practiced making tallies as we played a dice game.  Ask your child which number won in their game.  Also, see if your child can answer why we use tally marks.

Your child has homework tonight.  Please don’t spend more than 15 minutes or so on it.  Make sure your child’s name is on the paper.  Thanks!

Have a great evening!

9-11-09 Happenings

Welcome to our class blog!  Feel free to check in every day for a brief update about the happenings in 1-B.

Being a first grader is hard work!  We keep moving all day long!   Everyone looks super tired today.  I hope you are all able to have a restful weekend!  The students have learned our first grade routines quite well.   Ask your child how the center routine works.  We practiced that the last two days.

Please look for a field trip permission slip in the red folder and a Scholastic Book Order form.   Our class goes to the public library once a month.  Our first visit will be next Wednesday.  If you would like to attend with us, please send me a note on Monday.

Have a great weekend!
